Recently Slynnro wrote regarding her confusion? criticism? WTF-ness? of the JCrew models. I couldn't agree with her assessment more... Then today I received my Nov.09 JCrew catalog and in almost every picture, I found a horrifying shoe/sock combo that I cannot let go undiscussed...
It started all innocently enough with the woman on the right here... socks with these booties... not my fave, but not too bad either.
Then, I spied this... Hot pink and leopard? I don't know JCrew... but Ill let it slide this once... look at that pretty burgundy turtleneck? Oh you are wonderful after all...
Then... I saw this woman on the right who is jutting her hand like "What? Don't you always wear turquoise socks with your silver peep toe party shoes and your rolled up cords in case you have to hike through the pumpkin patch and don't want to get the edges dirty?"
And it didn't stop there. This model is like "Hey! Look up here at my scarf on my head! Pay no attention to my neon pink Frankie Says RELAX socks with these gold shoes that I think Daniela might need to buy!!"
And finally - This model is too bored to even fight with us about her socks...

I had my own Scary Nature morning yesterday... It was raining, blowing and I was generally happy to hear the rain and wind since it reminds me of growing up in the Pacific Northwest... when I heard a huge crack and the loudest thud imaginable on my roof... I ran outside in the pouring rain in my pajamas to see what it was....
That's my bedroom window there people. This is apparently not an entire tree, but only about 1/3 of the tree which split from the neighbors yard to land on my house. Does not appear to be much damage but will have to better asses after the tree guy comes out today to chop it up.
Quite a way to wake up.
I bought these right before a trial I had two years ago. I showed up in SF for a trial and I had brought two pair of "boring, sensible" heels since I would have to do more city walking. On day 1 of the trial, I realized that I was neither (1) boring nor (2) sensible. The whole point of having a dress-up job is getting to wear fun shoes.
I went on Endless back when they were doing their free overnight, $5 off every pair of shoes deal and ordered 6 pair (I only kept 3) and had them shipped directly to my hotel. My the third day of trial, I had my new shoes and all felt much better. I gave the boring, sensible heels away and have never made that mistake again.
Here's one of the pair I purchased: Franco Sarto, grey suede with the best grey patent leather trim. The suede toes look a little worse for wear, probably need to treat them and bring them back to their glory. Love these.
One of the ways many of us survive as working moms is to tell ourselves that we are trading off spending time with our young children (1) to provide for them in a financial way that enables us to do things perhaps our parents couldn't do for us and (2) by going to work we act as role models for them. Showing them, especially our young girls that women can work as well as be moms. The old, "you can have it all" myth.
As Amelia gets older I try to talk to her about what mommy does at work so she understands what mommy is doing when she's not with her. However, all my efforts do not appear to be paying off as she has a pretty strange idea of what I do at the office. Take this conversation in the car the other day. (I really REALLY wish I had a video camera mounted in my car because seriously? The best stuff ever is said by her in that car)
ME: So, honey did you have a good day at school?
AMELIA: Yeah, I did a new sewing job.
ME: (ooh... teaching moment) Oh that's good honey, mommy did her jobs at work too.
AMELIA: Yeah. I know that you were at work.
ME: What do you think Mommy does at work honey?
AMELIA: You play with your friends and eat gum.
Lately I've also been asking my friends' kids what they think their mommies are doing at work. The best one I heard so far was last night as I was driving my friend's daughter Mia in my car (see??!! best things ever are said in the car). We were driving past some downtown buildings and Mia points at one of the big buildings:
MIA: My daddy works in a big building.
Me: I know he does. What does your daddy do at work?
MIA: He works with his friends. He writes on paper.
Me: That sounds like a fun job.
MIA: Yeah.
Me: What does your mommy do at work?
MIA: (Looks at me like I'm crazy) My momma doesn't work!
Me: Oh she doesn't? (yes she does...and works hard) What does your mommy do all day when you are at school?
MIA: She goes swimming.
Oh well - so much for us being role models.
